Melbourne Water is highlighting our dedication to providing Melbourne with delicious water in honor of World Water Day.
World Water Day serves as a reminder of the importance that access to clean water and sanitary conditions is to maintaining our way of life, both in Melbourne and globally. It’s also an opportunity to consider and be grateful for our dependable, high-quality water systems and the efforts we put in to maintain them.
Being one of the few cities in the world with protected catchments, Melbourne is able to offer extremely high-quality drinking water that requires minimal treatment before it is available to the public.
Melbourne Water’s Head of Water Supply, Dr. Kim Moses, stated, “We take great pride in providing Melbournite’s with clean, clear, and delicious tap water every day. We were recently crowned Australia’s best tasting tap water last year.”
At 92% right now, Melbourne’s water storage levels are higher than they have been at this time of year in over 25 years.
While this is encouraging news, especially in light of the need to increase climate change resilience, Melbourne Water is still committed to making sure Melbourne has access to clean, delicious water and dependable water services—not just for now, but also for the future and future generations.
“But having resilient water supplies remains a high priority, as we know how storage levels can change very quickly if we experience extended dry conditions or drought,” Dr. Moses stated.
The quality and consistency of Melbourne’s water supply is essential to what we all appreciate about it. However, water is become more and more scarce as our population increases and the environment changes. Even when it’s pouring and our reservoirs are overflowing, everyone of us has a part to play in making every drop matter and conserving water. Because now is the moment to safeguard our water supply for the future.
How to make every drop matter
Take a minute less to shower.
We should aim for four minutes in the shower, as opposed to the average of seven. Just think of the effect if everyone turned off the faucet a few minutes sooner.
Shut off the water supply as you clean your teeth.
With each brushstroke, drinking water literally disappears.
Use a half-flush whenever possible.
Dual flush toilets are now common in most Melbourne homes. Do you also? A smart method to save money is to switch.
With the garden hose, use caution.
When it’s cooler, water your plants in the morning or late in the day. By doing so, less water will evaporate and reach the roots.
Repair a dripping faucet.
Sometimes all it takes is swapping out the washer or firmly shutting off the faucets.
Use your appliances’ eco settings.
Just selecting the “eco” setting on your dishwasher or washing machine and waiting to run the machine until the load is fully loaded will help you
Together, let’s leverage water for peace in Melbourne!
